NIS PROJECTS

The NIAR/Industry/State (NIS) program was created in 2004 as a way to help the Kansas aviation industry compete in a global economic environment. The program is executed by industrial representatives through an executive committee composed of representatives from Boeing, Bombardier-Learjet, Cessna and Raytheon. Each year the state-funded program awards NIAR faculty members with projects that will help Kansas in this globalization process.

The funding for FY 2005 was $2 million and consisted of 15 projects. The projects' topic areas ranged from composites to aircraft icing research. The following list highlights the titles of these programs related to composites and advanced materials research. The results of this research are proprietary to the Kansas aviation community.

  1. Design Philosophies for Structures Utilizing Metal and Composites With Large CTE Differences
  2. Repair of Composite Structures
  3. Blind or One-Sided Fastener Usage in Composite Structures
  4. Analysis of Braided Composite Structures
  5. Crashworthiness of Composite Fuselage Structure
  6. Friction Stir Welding and Related Topics
  7. Tolerancing Overview of Application to Support Aircraft Final Assembly
  8. Characterization of Fatigue Crack Development and Growth from Dents in 7475-T7351 Machined Wing Planks and Crack Growth Correlation between CRACKS95, AFGROW, and Empirical Data
  9. Review of the Capabilities of the Photogrammetry Technology as a Non-Destructive Testing Methodology
  10. Adhesive Joint Characterization and Testing
  11. Acoustic Material Database
